UCCE Master Gardeners' Annual Tomato Tasting Contest - Sat Aug 25

If you are like most gardeners, tomatoes are number one in your heart. Most of us eagerly anticipate the first delicious fruit of the season. We are all looking for the perfect tomato. Saturday, August 25th is your chance to put your tomatoes to the ultimate test! The UCCE Master Gardeners of Amador County are sponsoring a tomato judging and tasting contest at the Sutter Creek Farmer’s Market located on the corner of Main Street and Gopher Flat Road.

Bring at least one washed tomato of each variety (at least five cherry tomatoes) to the Sutter Creek Farmers Market between 8:30 -9:30 AM on Saturday, August 25th. The judges will begin their tasting at 10:00 and announce their favorites by 11:30 AM.

Prizes will be given for the biggest, as well as best tasting red, non-red and cherry tomatoes. Our fantastic judges will include Sue Mosbacher - Program Representative UCCE Master Food Preservers, Bill Tarchala - Competition Organizer, Amador Co. Fair, National Beer Judge, Mary Pulskamp - Rosebud's Restaurant, Farm to Fork, Jackson.

Join us for the public tasting and you will have fun tasting all kinds of tomatoes, from tiny grape-size tomatoes to giants the size of grapefruits, and a variety of colors, including yellow, orange, pink, tiger striped, and of course, ruby red. We are sure to have a tomato you’ve never tasted before and that may become your new favorite.

Andis Wines: 2013 Petite Sirah 90 pts Wine Enthusiast

Dear Friends,

Happy Bastille Day!

Bastille Day commemorates the Storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, and the unity of the French people at the Fête de la Fédération on July 14, 1790

Petite Sirah (“Peh-teet sear-ah”) (aka Durif or Petite Syrah) was first found growing in France in the mid-1800’s. It’s loved for its extraordinary deep color and full-bodied flavors of blueberry, chocolate, plums and black pepper. Despite its popularity, Petite Sirah is an exceptionally rare grape with less than 10,000 planted acres worldwide, growing mainly in California.

We would like to take this moment to highlight a very special wine that has everyone buzzing.

Our 2013 ANDIS Petite Sirah Received a 90pt score from the Wine Enthusiast.

This wine will not be released for quite some time. But you're in luck!

We are offering a limited time pre-release offering to help fill your racks and stock up your cellars.

Be the first to get your hands on this magnificent wine. Offer expires 7/31/2018 at 11:59.59 P.M.

2013 ANDIS Petite Sirah 90pts Wine Enthusiast

2013 ANDIS Petite Sirah
This wine is robust in flavor, appropriately laced with firm tannins and begs for a dry-aged Tbone to pair with. It has a deep color, moderately spicy blackberry aromas, and a firm mouthfeel. Blackberry and subtle blueberry flavors push through on the finish. Best after 2022. Pairs exceptionally well with roasted grilled and barbecued meats and Dry/Strong cheeses.
Original Price $30.00 - Pre Sale $25.00

Wine & Heat
The heat is on! Just a little reminder about wine tasting in the heat, wine is very sensitive and can be spoiled quicker than we might think.  Here are a few tips on wine tasting when it is over 85 degrees.
Travel with a cooler: Plan wine travel by allotting a cooler just for wine storage. Pack it with ice and try to keep it out of direct sunlight. Pack your cooler with ice packs: Regular ice can damage wine labels as it melts.
Keep the wine inside: Bring your bottle(s) into tasting rooms, restaurants, etc. If you are staying in one place for any length of time leave all your wine in your hotel room / hotel store room as they usually have air conditioning.
Park your car in a shaded area: Whether you have an insulator or not, always try to park your car in a shaded area.
Please remember: while on our grounds only consume alcoholic beverages purchased at Deaver Vineyards, it is against our ABC license.
