Local Author Releases Debut Novel at New Winery

The 2016 winegrape crush marks a beginning for a new winery as well as a new author.

Local writer Gwen Clayton has built her career in journalism and public relations. On Oct. 1, she releases her first fiction novel, "Fermata Cellars" during the Amador Vintner Association's Big Crush at Plymouth's newest tasting room, 24 Brix.

"The book is a whole new genre I'm calling Political Science Fiction," Clayton said. "It's about a haunted winery that battles the city council over eminent domain. An unscrupulous real estate investor leads the campaign to have the government declare the parcel a risk to public safety and sell the property to him at a cheap price. The twist is that the ghost and the investor have met each other before - many lifetimes ago in a garden of what is now Iraq."

24 Brix Winery is located at 17585 State Hwy 49 in Plymouth. During the 2016 Big Crush Celebration on October 1-2, the tasting room will feature grape stomping activities and specialty appetizers paired with their wines. For more information, or call (209) 680-9035.

To learn more about Gwen Clayton, visit "Fermata Cellars" is available for sale online at Retail price is $3.99 for the Kindle version and $10 for paperback.

Annual Master Gardener Tomato Tasting Results 2016

Tomato Tasting judges and gardeners alike agreed it was a challenging year for tomato growers.  Nevertheless on August 27th, judges Darius Somary from Jackson Rancheria and local radio personality Steve Muni met at the Sutter Creek Farmers Market to taste, spit, and sip their way through the dozens of entries submitted at the annual Tomato Tasting sponsored by the UCCE Master Gardeners of Amador County.
The heaviest tomato, a Great White entered by Jim Carr of Volcano, weighed in at a whopping 26 ounces.  Jim also entered a Red Brandywine at 24.7 ounces.
Usually a sweep of Sungold tomatoes, this year’s cherry tomato category reversed the usual trend with all three winners submitting different varieties.  First place went to newcomer Ron McMahan of Sutter Creek with Tidy Treats, second place was awarded to Vicki Chew of Pioneer who entered her Napa Grape Hybrid, and third place went to Ed Morin of Pine Grove with a variety called Blush.
A rainbow of yellows, pinks, purples, and golds made up the non-red category.  First place went to Jim Carr of Volcano with his Pink Brandywine, second place went to Tom Jillson of Herald with his Dr. Wyche, and third place went to Ron McMahan with Black Cherokee.
Lastly, the red category continued with some familiar winning names. Ron McMahan took first place with Martha Washington, Deb Lyons of Pine Grove took second place with Big Raspberry, and third place went to Jim Carr with his Brandywine.
When asked about his tomato success, newcomer Ron McMahan excitedly explained his success with rice straw bales and adherence to specific temperature guidelines found online. There’s no arguing with success. Thanks to all who participated in this year’s contest. Amador Master Gardeners will be back again for next year’s Tomato Tasting.
