Old Well Bar & Grill defines baking "from scratch"

Story by Sarah Spinetta

93- year old Mary Lou Kaffer, from the Old Well Bar and Grill, is by far the pie aficionado of Amador County. She has been baking for at the Old Well for over 56 years and has perfected her own secret recipes that are one of a kind. Every baked good is homemade from scratch by Mary Lou herself, with the help of her son, Eddie.

“I bake everything from scratch. One lady went to the grocery store looking for this thing called ’scratch’ and could not find it,” Mary Lou said. “I laughed and said that ‘made from scratch’ means that it is homemade!” She concocts a wide range of pie flavors, including apple, apricot, peach, strawberry, rhubarb, cherry, banana cream, pumpkin and coconut cream.

In the Summer, they pick fresh peaches in orchards in the county right off of the tree and puts them straight into the pie. This gives them the sweetest and freshest tasting pie you will ever have. “The blackberry pie is the most popular,” Mary Lou said. “People love the fresh baked pies.” In addition to a variety of pies, she also makes cheesecake and bread pudding.

The Old Well also serves hamburgers, a different soup every day, breakfast, steak and more! The quaint restaurant is a wonderful place to get a piece of Drytown’s history and enjoy the friendly atmosphere. The Old Well Motel and Grill is located at 15947 CA 49, Drytown and their phone number is 209-245-6467.

Our Splendid Table: A Mother Lode Summer Solstice Celebration - Sat June 18

Tickets are on sale now for Mother Lode Harvest’s first Farm-to-Fork dinner on Saturday June 18 at 5:30 pm at  Abbondanza Farm in the Shenandoah Valley.

The Summer Solstice celebration includes a Mediterranean-inspired dinner prepared from  locally-grown foods, music, solstice festivities and a silent auction.

Dinner will feature lamb or vegetarian options. Appetizers, salad and the main course will abound with spring and early summer vegetables from local farms followed by seasonal fruit shortcakes for dessert. Local wines and beer will be available for purchase.

Music by the Amador City All-Star Ukamaniacs will set a lively tone for the evening, as will the vibrant colors of sunflowers, lavender and the Shenandoah Valley views.

The celebration honoring the beginning of summer will include solstice reflections by Elaine Zorbas of Mirabelle Orchard and Vineyard and Daniel D’Agostini of Abbondanza Farm.

The evening concludes with a sing-along of summer songs and a solstice dance at sunset.

This event is a fundraiser to help upgrade the MLH website, the marketing and communication hub for the organization’s farmers, ranchers, bee keepers, candle makers, bakers and customers throughout Amador, Calaveras and other surrounding counties.

Tickets to the event are $35 for MLH members and $40 for non-members and are available online at www.mlharvest.com or call Emily at 530-620-4548 or Michelle at 209-419-2503.

Judge Smith told Clerk Col. Collier he would put him on the next official election ballot.  He did; but also put up his friend Joseph Douglas.  With some manipulation of votes Douglas wins!  A count later showed Collier 976 and Douglas 795.  Collier declares in public: “I will shoot Judge Smith on sight!”  September 14, 1851 Judge Smith stepped down off the steps of the National Hotel and onto the street.  In front of him is Col. Collier who had a large pistol in his waist band.  Collier punched the Judge knocking him down.  The judge tries to pull his pocket pistol and fires one round through his pants, getting it out; he fires three more rounds which find Collier’s right arm, left shoulder, and a fatal bullet between his kidney and liver.  Our first County Judge was charged with murder! Next month the results!
